Dr Louisa Monzani
Welcome! My name is Dr Louisa Monzani and I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist.
I am passionate about working with children, young people and parents/carers who are experiencing mental health and emotional difficulties and helping them to overcome the challenges that are getting in the way of being able to live their lives to the full.
I have worked in the NHS for more than twenty years including over sixteen years at Great Ormond Street Hospital and several years in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), so I have vast experience of helping young people (babies though to young adults) as well as their parents/carers and families.
I specialise in working psychologically with children and young people who have physical health conditions (such as helping them cope with the emotional, social and academic impact of illness, disability, and/or medical treatments) and those with mental health difficulties (such as low mood, anxiety, trauma, stress and eating difficulties). I also offer parenting support and have a particular interest in medical trauma for adults and children.
When meeting with new clients, my first priority is to create a nurturing, non- judgemental and compassionate environment through which trust can be built. I am respectful and empathic and will give all the time that is needed to build that essential therapeutic relationship. I work collaboratively with clients and their families to understand their difficulties and what they would like to achieve from therapy.
The assessment process is essential for me to develop an in depth understanding of each client, the world in which they live and the challenges they are facing, not forgetting their strengths and supports. Through the assessment I will work with clients to make sense of their situation and consider whether psychological intervention may be helpful.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I am trained in a number of different therapeutic approaches so I can draw on different interventions to find the approach that suits each client best. I am guided by the evidence base (i.e. what the research tells us is effective for certain types of difficulties) but also my many years of experience and clinical intuition; as well as any preferences clients may have. I often use CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), EMDR (eye movement desensitizing and reprocessing) and ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), but may incorporate ideas from other approaches. I have additional post-doctoral training in EMDR (adult and child) and ACT.
I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I offer face to face appointments in the Esher/Surbiton area and online.
